Journey to the 2018 Merrie Monarch Festival

March 12, 2018

Each spring, kumu Napua leads the wahine of Halau Na Lei Kaumaka O Uka on their Merrie Monarch journey, which includes a time of absolute focus and dedication known as hula kapu. By eliminating distractions and dedicating themselves to the knowledge and practice of their hula, the ʻōlapa are able to ready themselves in mind, body and spirit to fulfill their kuleana to the mele. Yesterday the #naleiloves began hula kapu as the important final phase of the #merriemonarch journey before they arrive in Hilo. Though she is taking a break from social media to focus during kapu, our Pihana Productions team will keep you up to date on all the exciting happenings along the way to document the journey. In the words of kumu Napua, “Time to turn off the chatter of the world. Time to clear ourselves, “the vessel,” of negativity and doubt. Time to commune with our akua, kini akua, ʻaumakua and kūpuna to assist us in transformation. Time to walk in the footsteps of our kūpuna.” Photo by @trishbarkerphotography
